TV grabs and holds?

Excessive cravings do not necessarily involve physical substances. Gambling can become compulsive; sex can become obsessive. One activity, however, stands out for its prominence and ubiquity–the world’s most popular leisure pastime, television.

“It is past 12 and you are blankly staring at a rerun of “WOWOWEE”. You meant to have your lunch hours ago, but the time has somehow managed to slip through your fingers. Your hand reaches for the remote.”

“It’s Saturday afternoon and your bestfriend since high school calls and asks to meet with you over coffee. She has some exciting news and she can’t wait to share it. “Wait until “EAT BULAGA” is over,” you reply.”

Sound familiar? If so, you may be addicted to your TV. Talk shows will likely go vivid. Sitcoms and dramas will halt production. Reality shows and newsmagazines will flood the prime time schedule. In short, TV could change every life dramatically.

Everyone knows TV can be very compelling. It has the ability to completely shut out the rest of our crazy world. All the world’s problems vanish as you are wrapped in a cozy TV wonderland. The relaxation is almost immediate. Unfortunately, this sense of relaxation ends as soon as the TV is turned off. The cozy little wonderland disappears. You don’t even get the benefit of a gradual withdrawal. Poof! It’s all gone. What’s worst is your tummy grumbles and you lost a bestfriend.

Impact of television is extremely strong over the population. It has been beneficial in promoting advertisement industry to a great extent which in turn has a positive blow over the economy of our country. It also helps sustain mass communication and make them relatively inexpensive; a great source of information I say. The impact of television on children, however, must receive great attention. The distorted spelling and pronunciations used in television programming for little humour are responsible for spoiling the purity of language. Watching excess television gives birth to poisoned thoughts in youth’s mind. Their creativity becomes sluggish; concentration span is reduced and visualization becomes flattered. Television shows introduce a world of fantasy. This makes a person unsatisfied as he is unable to achieve the comforts which he had experienced in the fantasy world.
